Shelbi Zaldain's Blog

Hi, My name is Shelbi and iI play for SLCC volleyball. So far the season with the team has been unforgettable! Just this last weekend we finished up with our pre-season ball, which was basically just tournaments. It was a good chance for us to see what we are going to be up against in our Conference play. This weekend we are playing CEU and Colorado Northwestern both of the games are away so we will be on the road cruisin' on a charter bus!

Anyway, i am so excited for the rest of the season and to see what it will bring us, and how we will all grow as one BIG happy family! :-)

Catalina Charry's Blog

HI, Im Cataling Charry, i'm from Colombia. I'm a setter of the Bruins Volleyball team. I'm so happy to being here. The team is very good. The girls and the coaches are amazing, I LOVE THEM :-D I think this is gonna be a great season for SLCC Volleyball

We just arrived from Twin Falls, Idaho. The top 7 teams in the nation were there, so it was a very competitive tournament. All the teams lost and won games.. IT was a good experience for us.

On our drive back home, we discused as a team about our expectaions for this year. We always have fun rides driving places. Unless your in Coach Sue Dulany's car, cuz she will go use the bathroom and drop her car keys in the toilet. OOOPZZ guess you have to walk home :-)

Ame' White's Blog

Hi, my name is Ame. I play volleyball for SLCC. This past weekend we were down in Arizona for a tournament it was a nice change, because instead of driving there, we fot to FLY! out first noiht soen there we went to Olive Garden for dinner. SO-O GOOD! everyone was fighting for the chocolate andes minst they bring ur, so they brought our cups full of them.

It was a pretty good tournament, we only lost 1 match, in five games. We then won our next match in five games again! becasue both our matches went to five games we has to rush to the airport, only to find our flight was delayed an hour. So we got to eat ath the delicious Paradise Bakery where the cashier thought hapf our team was sick because out voices were fone from screaming. The flight back was smooth and quick. Now wer are ready to kick some trash in the CSI tournament this weekend.

No. 6 Salt Lake Volleyball Defeats #3 North Idaho in Four-Sets

The sixth ranked Salt Lake CC Bruins faced a difficult two matches today at the CSI -Starr Corporation Invitational. Facing a strong #3 North Idaho team and defending National Champions #2 Blinn College. Salt Lake defeated #3 North Idaho in four sets (25-19, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-22) but fell to #2 Blinn in four sets (27-25, 20-25, 20-25 and 23-25). With the road split #6 Salt Lake is now 15-4.

The Bruins had struggled against #3 North Idaho; two of Salt Lake’s three losses had come at the hands of North Idaho. However third times the charm for Salt Lake, winning the match in four 25-19, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-22. Shelbi Zaldain was an offensive force with 12 kills and three service aces. Erika Charry and Melissa Fifita each added 10 kills to aid in the Bruin attack.

Next up was the defending 2008 National Champions, #2 Blinn College of Texas, #6 Salt Lake put up a fight losing in 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 20-25 and 23-25). Melissa Fiftia had another strong game putting 12 kills to the floor. Shelbi Zaldain and LaKell Havens each had 10 kills. Catalina Charry finished with 32 assist sets and defensively Kelsey Campbell dug 11 balls while Anna Burgess had 10 digs.

No. 6 Salt Lake (15-4, 0-0 SWAC) finishes the weekend with two more intense matches against #17 Frank Phillips College and the #1 ranked team College of Southern Idaho. The Bruins return home on October 3rd to take on Snow College.

#3 Volleyball wins two tough games today on the road in Arizona. They have three more games in the tournament and look to add to the win total. Come out and support out team on Ocotber 3rd when we take on SWAC opponet SNOW College.

No. 3 Salt Lake Takes Two on the Road

No. 3 Salt Lake CC Bruin volleyball wins two matches on the road against Yavapai (25-20, 25-14, 25-10) and a five set thriller against #19 Arizona Western (22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13). With the two wins #3 Salt Lake is now 12-2 and 5-1 on the road.

Sophomore Melissa Fifita led the third ranked Bruins with 11 kills and five digs in the three set win against Yavapai (25-20, 25-14, 25-10). Erika Charry hit six kills and blocked two and LaKell Havens connected on four aces from the service line.

No. 19 Arizona Western put up a strong fight losing to #3 Salt Lake in a five set thriller (22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13). Erika Charry put 13 balls down on the floor and was a defensive force with six blocks. Ame’ White killed 10 balls with the help of Catalina Charry who finished with 36 sets. Libero Kim Gourley dug 15 balls from the back row.

No. 3 Salt Lake (12-2) hits the hard wood again tonight at 6 pm against Glendale Community and tomorrow at 1 pm against Scottsdale Community. The team returns home on October 3rd to face Snow College.

SLCC Volleyball Ranked #3 in NJCAA

The Salt Lake Community College Volleyball team is ranked 3rd in the NJCAA Division I National poll. Salt Lake has a record of 10-2 with their only two losses coming from No. 2 North Idaho College. The team has impressive wins against #4 Western Nebraska, #7 Missouri State-West Plains, # 8 College of Southern Idaho, #14 Northeastern College and #19 Arizona Western.

Freshmen Ame’ White leads the team offensively with 70 kills in the young season followed by sophomore Whitney Nilson and freshmen Shelbi Zaldain both with 69 kills. Zaldain also leads the team with 25 service aces. Salt Lake has proved to be solid on the defensive side of the ball, holding opponents to 1.7 kills per game, digging 13.9 balls and 2.1 blocks per game.

No. 3 Salt Lake returns home October 3rd to take on Snow College at Bruin Arena. Match time set for 7pm.

No. 5 Salt Lake CC Volleyball places 2nd at Marriott Residence Inn Tournament

The Volleyball team just finished hosting the Marriott Residence Inn Tournament. The team played great and finished in 2nd place losing a tough five set match to North Idaho. Ame' White was named All Tournament. Next the team heads to Scottsdale, Arizona for the Scottsdale Tournament.

Day One

The Salt Lake Community College volleyball team opened up the Marriott Residence Inn tournament with four strong wins. Salt Lake defeated Central Wyoming (25-17, 25-16), Arizona Western (25-18, 25-10), Northeastern College (25-17, 25-22) and Jefferson College (25-20, 22-25, 15-12). The four wins puts Salt Lake’s record at 8-1 heading into tomorrow’s tournament bracket play.

Against Central Wyoming, Salt Lake was led on the attack by Shelbi Zaldain with seven kills. Catalina Charry and Namoi Flinders combined for 22 of the 24 sets in the games. On the defensive side Kelsey Campbell had seven digs while Anna Burgess had six.

Salt Lake took care of business quickly against Arizona Western winning the matches easily. Salt Lake had 28 team kills compared to only nine for Western. Flinders propelled the offense with 14 sets and Zaldain served three aces. Defensively, Kelsey Campbell had six digs and two service aces.

The third match was against Northeastern College with Salt Lake winning 25-17 and 25-22. Zaldain led the way with five kills and four aces. Charry and Flinders each had nine sets. Defensively, Campbell had eight digs and LaKell Havens had four block assists.

The final match of Friday was Salt Lake’s toughest going three sets. Whitney Nilson led the offence with eight kill and Charry had 25 sets. Flinders entered the game in the third set and contributed with six sets to push the Bruins to the win. Campbell had another defensive game with 10 digs. Erika Charry had nine kills in the games and three block assists.

Day Two

Salt Lake CC volleyball placed second at the Marriott Residence Inn tournament losing to North Idaho (25-14, 14-25, 27-25, 22-25, 10-15) in a five set championship match. Salt Lake played three matches during the day beating Western Nebraska (18-25, 25-18, 15-12) and Missouri State West Plains (24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12). Salt Lake’s record is now 10-2 with their only losses to North Idaho in the season.

In the first match Salt Lake faced a tough Western Nebraska team. In a three set match where both teams played sloppy, Salt Lake was able to pull ahead and take the match, 18-25, 25-18 & 15-12. Ame’ White led Salt Lake with seven kills; Shelbi Zaldain tallied six kills and libero Kim Gourley had eight defensive digs. Western Nebraska committed 19 attacking errors while Salt Lake only had eight errors.

Salt Lake earned the number one seed in the tournament with a 5-0 record. A three way tie for second place meant that a tough Missouri State West Plains was the first opponent for Salt Lake in bracket play.

Salt Lake and Missouri battled for five matches with each set within three points; 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25 & 15-12. Offensively, Erika Charry led the charge with 13 kills and Whitney Nilson finished with 11 kills, seven blocks. Catalina Charry had a season high 41 sets and Gourley posted a season high 19 digs. The win against Missouri put Salt Lake into the championship game against North Idaho College

The championship match started promising for Salt Lake winning easily 25-14. However North Idaho answered back beating Salt Lake easily 14-25. The next three sets went back and forth with Salt Lake winning the third 27-25 but dropping the final two 22-25 and 10-15. Whitney Nilson finished with a double- double with 13 kills and 10 digs while Melissa Fifita registered 11 kills. Libero Kim Gourley had a season high 29 digs from the back row.

Salt Lake (10-2) hits the road for the Scottsdale Tournament in Arizona on September 11-12.

No. 5 Bruins Win Season Opener at Home

No. 5 Salt Lake CC volleyball beat Western Wyoming CC in three games; 25-20, 25-21 and 25-13. The win brings Salt Lake’s record to 4-1 on the season.

Every Salt Lake CC player saw action in the three games. Freshmen Erika Charry led the offense with nine kills followed by sophomore Anna Nostrant with eight kills and freshmen Shelbi Zaldain served six aces in two matches. Salt Lake had 45 total kills compared to only 14 for Western. On the defensive side of the ball Salt Lake tallied three team blocks against the Western attack and Kelsey Campbell had eight digs.

No. 5 Salt Lake now hosts the Marriott Residence Inn Invitational on September 3-4 at Bruin Arena. Salt Lake begins the tournament at 8:30 am on Friday, September 3rd and concludes the tournament Saturday, September 4th.
